Throwing on the wheel

Starts Wednesday 15th of January 2025 runs for 5 consecutive Wednesdays till 12th of February. Class times are 10am to 1pm.

This is a pure throwing class aimed at students who have had some experience of throwing on the potters wheel and want to develop their skills.

This class will focus primarily on forms and working with the clay on the wheel both throwing and turning, we will not be glazing in this class. *There is an option to glaze pieces after the course.

Over 5 weeks we will be getting the fundamentals of throwing in place, starting with the most important part; centring. Starting with the first class you will be shown methods to centre the clay and given opportunity to practice and improve your technique. You will be guided through your centring practice until you are confident and succeeding with your method.

Each week will explore an important form such as a straight sided cup, a rounded bowl, a closed top vessel and a plate. These shaped form the basis of many forms and the idea of learning each of these with repetition is to start give you the ability and confidence to then create forms of your own design with a good foundation of skills. Repetition and practice is everything!

Declaimer: This class alone will not make you a master potter, creating on the wheel is a skill that takes time, tenacity and dedication, however this class will progress your skills along and will also inform you if you want to pursue wheel throwing more seriously and invest in a wheel at some stage if you decide you love it and it's for you.

This a a very small class, 5 students max. Every participant on a wheel. 3 hour sessions with 15mins before end to clean up/wrap up pieces.

*This class focuses on improving skills as opposed to making products. Some pieces will be cut down the middle to check for wall thickness and uniformity. You will be encouraged to recycle your clay by wedging and only fire pieces you are truly happy with. This is to move your skills along by not becoming too attached to the outcome and having finished pieces. This also teaches about recycling clay and about discernment with regards to firing work and the resources that uses. Basically we only fire the really good stuff! Optional glazing class after this course or you can glaze during one of the weekly pottery class if you are attending one of those.
